A man was shot in an Annapolis apartment complex this afternoon where residents say drug activity is rampant.

The 26-year-old victim was in the corner of the Timothy Gardens parking lot when he was shot once in the leg about 1:39 p.m.

Authorities flew the man to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was being treated for the serious but not life-threatening injury, said Lt. John Bowes of the Annapolis Fire Department.

Paramedics load a 26-year-old gunshot victim into an ambulance in the Timothy Gardens apartments.

Police cordoned off the parking lot for about an hour while they collected evidence and spoke with witnesses. Investigators left the scene on Monument Street about 2:25 p.m.

Ray Weaver, a police spokesman, didn't have any details about the incident, but said detectives were trying to identify a suspect.

Residents who were inside their apartments just steps away from the shooting told The Muckraker they didn't see or hear anything.

Most people in the community appeared unfazed by the shooting. Many sat on their front steps and enjoyed the sunny afternoon while police investigated. A teenager skateboarded on the sidewalk, and one man enjoyed a 40-ounce bottle of Colt 45.

One woman, who wouldn't give her name, said “hoodlums” constantly sell drugs from the patch of grass where the man was apparently shot.

Anywhere from two to 15 young men sit next to a red fence dealing dope, she said. Most aren't from the neighborhood.

If the fence were removed, they'd leave, she said.

But gunshots are frequently heard, and residents are so used to the sound that they don't even call police.

“We hear it so much and don't even run to the window or anything,” she said.

This afternoon's shooting was the city's third this week. Police last night charged a man with shooting two people in a jealous rage in Admiral Heights. (see related story)
